VOLUNTEER TESTIMONIAL
by Nancy P Sherman L.Ac
Compass Cascade Woman's Program

I have been providing acupuncture for the residents at Compass Cascade Women’s Program for two years. Compass is a transitional residence for adult women of all ages who are without housing. They may live at Compass for up to one year while they seek work or training/education that will lead to employment, take care of family and healthcare issues and otherwise receive help with attaining the stability needed in their lives to move on to permanent homes. Each resident has a private furnished studio apartment, with small groups sharing bathroom facilities and a central shared kitchen and dining area. There are many other common areas for activities such as movies, reading and spaces for exercise and crafts classes, support group meetings, counseling and the healthcare services provided by the AHAC practitioners who volunteer their time. Compass houses 34 residents.

How does acupuncture benefit these women?

Many are helped with chronic pain. Emotional conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD and insomnia are addressed. This is an opportunity to receive a drug-free, natural therapy that can give those suffering from fatigue an energetic “lift”.

Treatments are relaxing for the body, mind and spirit. Some women have struggled with chemical dependency and Oriental Medicine can reduce cravings, support other therapies and the development of better coping skills.

For 30 minutes, each participant can feel that her comfort, well-being, need and her own story (should she share it) are the center of my attention and care. It can be a time to feel nurtured, introspective and quietly at peace in a world that can be especially chaotic for people in these circumstances. Some are inspired to try other self-healing methods such as meditation and yoga classes (which are offered free at the center). One resident recently said: “I have received the best health care in my entire life since living here.”

How do the AHAC providers benefit by volunteering?

For myself professionally and personally, it is profoundly gratifying to make a positive difference, even small or fleeting, in another’s life. To meet people as they are and where they are in their lives with respect, compassion and grace is the greatest gift in this relationship and it is ours to receive.
